Traditional Japanese clothese are a very important part of Japanese culture. Because, it present Japanese identity and characteristics. Also, Japanese Traditional clothese are loved by not only Japanese, but also foreigners. It are very beautiful, and praised by the all over the world. Traditional Japanese costumes are proud of the world. By the way, what springs to mind when you hear the word “Japanese traditional clothese”? I think many people imagine Kimono, Yukata and Furisode. On this page will introduce Japanese traditional clothese including these.
Kimono
Kimono is the most famous Japanese traditional clothese all over the world. There are many types of kimono, and there are various colors and design. Kimono is said to start with the clothes (Kosode) worn during the Heian period. In the Edo period, Kosode became a complete shape and changed into a Kimono and Obi. With the Meiji Restoration and the opening of the nation, the clothes rapidly became Westernized, and the clothes of both Japanese and Western styles spread to the general public. Before the Meiji period , all Japanese people wore kimono. However, nowadays people don’t wear kimono so often in daily life. Because recent year, people think kimono is formal wear. People wear kimono for special day , such as wedding receptions.
Yukata
Kimono and Yukata is very similar. But, Yukata is a casual kimono made from cotton. Also, Yukata is lighter than regular kimono. In edo period, Yukata used to be worn when they sleep. However, nowadays people wear kimono when they do to summar festival. Nowadays, patterns and colors have evolved for the modern age, and you can see many unique patterns and yukatas with a colorful design. Yukata is not formal wear, so we can’t wear formal occasions.
Furisode
Furisode is one of the Kimono. Furisode is kimono for woman who are’t married. A Furisode has long sleeves with a length about 1 meter. People wear Furisode for Coming-of-Age Day. Many women who wear Furisode participate and celebrate ceremony. In addition, wearing Furisode is so special that many Japanese women take pictures in the studio before or after the ceremony, and make an album.
Hakama
Hakama is a divided or pleated skirt worn over a Kimono. Hakama is worn by both man and woman. Men wear it on weddings or Coming-of-Age Day. Women wear it on graduation ceremony.
